Slovenian producer Umek returns to his techno roots on his latest release, ‘Asiiiid’. The Waveform Transmitter’s Ste Knight enjoys some hard-as-nails electronic fayre.
Here at The Waveform Transmitter we love our techno. Safe to say that when we first clapped ears on Umek‘s latest offering, we were delighted to hear that he has gone head-first back into the rough, tough techno that first brought him to the electronic music fans’ conscious.
We spoke to Umek recently about his flirtation with other styles of music than the techno we were previously used to hearing. He seemed pleased to be falling back onto his techno throne. You won’t hear us complaining!
Asiiiid starts out with a throbbing, fallout siren-style saw-wave bass that takes hold of the listener and doesn’t let go. This is soon punctuated by some crisp percussion that whacks the temperature right up to boiling point and we buckle in for the ride. The thundering track is peak-time techno fodder, perfect for a big room set pounding out of a Funktion One soundsystem.
Umek continues the sonic assault on the senses with lazer effects zap-zap-zapping past the listeners head as if under assault from a relentless cyborg army, before a wailing tribal vocal snippet kicks in which almost sounds siren-like in itself. The track is full-on in terms of energy and keeps the listener gripped throughout. The track is available now on Umek‘s 1605 Music Therapy imprint.
Here’s hoping Umek gives it an outing on Friday March 3rd when he is set to play at Underground in Liverpool for Motion. Tickets for the gig are available from Skiddle, here. Be quick though – they’re on their phase 3 tickets so it looks like a sellout.
