On the Radar: Kristin Velvet – Now or Never EP

Off the back of a stellar performance at our House for the Homeless event, Kristin Velvet drops her latest release on Detone Records. The Waveform Transmitter’s Ste Knight is all ears.

Kristin Velvet is ‘one of those’ producers, whose skills in the studio translate perfectly to her skills behind the wheels. We can tell you this with good authority because not only have we been following her productions for quite some time now, but we were also lucky enough to have her DJ for us at our House for the Homeless event recently too.

These skills are being justifiably noticed across the international board now, as she has had her most recent release signed by none other than Darren Emerson‘s Detone imprint. The two track EP, Now or Never, offers up a pair of chunky house cuts that well and truly bring the funk back to the house scene.

The opener is title track, Now or Never, which draws perfectly on Kristin‘s trademark retro house sensibilities. The track fires up with a punchy kick drum as a filtered, disco-esque synth line segues into the mix. This is punctuated by hissing cymbal crashes, before the vocal snippet bounds energetically onto the stage, showcasing Velvet‘s ability to pick out sounds from house music’s history and bring them right into the now.

A swirling string sample completes the layered track, again pulling together disco and house, which makes sense given that the former undeniably gave rise to the latter.

On the flip, we have an altogether techier, peak-time banger in the form or The Lothario. This is definitely a track that would steal your girlfriend given the first opportunity, whisking her away to somewhere far more exciting than you could ever offer.

The track is awash with dark synth work, which is perfect for going full pelt in a sweaty club somewhere on Berlin’s back streets, pulling that familiar ‘pigface’ (™ Rob Draper) while your body jacks along to the infectious groove. Rolling percussive breaks take the fore, while the thundering bassline rumbles along below and a robotic stab pops its head up from behind the parapet. Fucking exciting stuff this.

Three minutes in and the mix drops out most of the percussion for a build brimming with suspense, before we are plunged back into ‘going bonkers’ territory as a vocal sample announces ‘If I say stop this…’ and the energy is ploughed back into the track for the final third.

One thing that strikes us about Kristin Velvet‘s productions is her ability to borrow from several separate styles in order to create a unique take on house music that is completely fresh. Hip-hop, house, techno, and disco all enter the fray, culminating in a wonderfully mellifluous sound, and one that keeps on giving with every listen.

We can’t wait to hear Kristin‘s next outing, but for now, check out Now or Never, below (available now from Detone Records). You’ll be glad you did.
