On the Radar: James Braun – Tearjerker EP

James Braun House Techno

James Braun returns to the Tartelet imprint with his first EP in five years, Tearjerker. The Waveform Transmitter’s Ste Knight welcomes back the label mainstay.

James Braun has been a staple artist for Tartelet since they launched their label back in 2007. His involvement in the label has seen it growing exponentially over the past ten years into a well respected underground house and techno imprint.

Braun has recently announced the release of his debut album, due to drop in 2018, and in celebration has released his latest EP, Tearjerker, via the label. The physical release consists of four slabs of high-temperature house music, with the digital release gracing us with two additional bonus tracks.

The EP was produced in Copenhagen’s new Panalama Studio, which Braun co-runs with Lasse Walentin. We can see how James‘ sound has developed during his five-year haitus from production, with a shift towards a more melodic vibe being noticeable.

The EP kicks off with the title track, Tearjerker, which is rich in groove with a bassline to die for. Exemplary padwork gives the track an ethereal feel, which echoes the wistful memories of teenage summertime upon which the track was founded.

The re-rub, Galaxy Dub, drops a delightful acid line over the mix and the addition of strings gives the track more of a late-night feel in contrast to the daytime, Ibiza-balcony undertones of the original.

If we were to go out on a limb, we would possibly suggest that the third track on the release, Panalama Party People, has certain a trancey feel to it thanks to the acidic synth, with a bassline that arpeggiates like nobody’s business.

Track four is VERY heavy on the 707 percussion. Hakkebof has a minimal feel to it, while seemingly retaining a degree of brute strength behind the textures.

The digital release features two bonus tracks, Panalama Party People (Wilma Remix) offers a glimpse of Copenhagen’s underground nightlife scene, while Tearjerker (JB’s Galaxy Deeper Dub) takes listeners on a dub-techno excursion.

James Braun – Tearjerker EP is available to buy now from all good record and digital retailers. Take a listen to the title track, below.
