Diverse producer Kapote bags his latest EP on Toy Tonic, Temptation. The Waveform Transmitter’s Andy Weights is all ears for the genre-defying composer.
Back, with a new EP titled Temptation, is the Berlin-based producer, passionate vinyl digger and prolific DJ, Kapote. Head of the brilliant Toy Tonics label, his music is hard to file under one genre.
“I hate cliché’s in dance music” he says. “My DJ sets are never committed to just one style, so, I want my EPs to be more open than most DJ records are.”
Swapping and changing up styles is exactly his bag, whether its downtempo hip-hop melting into French house as it sails over to broken beats and techno, if you have ever heard Kapote playing records you will recognize his amazing ability to create a flow out of very different sounds. Not to mention that the fella loves his funk and the man has groove to boot!
Temptation sees his DJ selector style merge into his own productions, starting with a deep, sample based 118bpm house track, similar to the mood of the recent Toy Tonic cuts from Black Loops and Coeo tracks. The EP opener uses a bell like electric piano to create a soft feel that confidently steps up with an orchestra of instruments that hinge on the funky, deep house groove.
Leaving the usual four/four grooves behind, second track Curation is a cracker of a track, because of its jumping beat and chord progressions it is quite difficult to classify, smells of certain stuff coming out of the mid 90’s dance jazz scene. With a little help from his label brother Munk, who supplied the bass and synths, the track explodes sporadically into elated, overdriven piano. Ecstatic! Detuned, synth swirls with portamento bends that rise boldly, taking the euphoria higher and higher.
So, it’s the end of this unique EP and the breakbeat, funk, arse shaker Salvation arrives just in time, dirty beats, Jazz-funk electric piano with plenty of music for the freaks, but the freaks come out at night and Kapote loves the freaky shit, as he does the funk and jazz – put your ear to speaker and with the final quote, above a piano with tremolo “go with the flow”
Out now, on Toy Tonics the Temptation EP by Kapote is very refreshing and should be dispensed like cans of coke, but it isn’t! You will have to find it in a shop or online, I suggest you do.
