Tokyo producer DJ Nozaki drops his latest EP on the venerated London-based Unknown to the Unknown label, today. The Waveform Transmitter‘s Ste Knight takes a listen to UZKZOWZ.

DJ Nozaki should be a name familiar with the purist house heads, given that he is the man at the head of Tokyo imprint, 10 Inches of Pleasure; very much a boutique label that has seen releases from Nozaki himself (also under his ZZZ guise), Takahito Mitsukuri (aka Mick) and Pepe California.

Nozaki‘s latest EP, ‘UZKZOWZ’, is to be released via DJ Haus‘ brilliant Unknown to the Unknown stable and is steeped in house music tropes. From the off we are treated to several samples from Lyn Collins‘ Think (About It). First off, the track completely flips the message of the original sample, instructing us to ‘go out and stay out all night’; exactly what Lyn didn’t want us doing! This is quickly punctuated by a skittering Yeah! Woo! break (thank you, Mr.Brown), leading us into the track proper.

As the bassline kicks in, we are all to aware of the Baltimore influences coursing through the veins of this track. A bulging acid swell comprises the melodic elements of the bottom end, immediately injecting more energy into the track. If you don’t shake it to this, you’re probably dead. If you are simply sleeping, as opposed to having slipped off the mortal coil, then the drop halfway through should start you straight into some riotous jiggling.

The original is backed up by two remixes, one by Nozaki himself, the Stir All Nite Mix, which, by reversal of the percussion loop and a doubling up of the Yeah! Woo! sample and stuttering of Lyn‘s ‘all night’ refrain, comes out of the mixing pot as a jungle/house hybrid. Great fun. The second remix is a treatment by UTTU label head, DJ Haus, which ups the tempo and adds a pinch of Chicago spice, making the remix perfect for adding some heat to the dancefloor.
