Wes Baggaley drops his brilliant new EP, Murder Part 1, via Interzone Music Club this Friday. The Waveform Transmitter’s Ste Knight takes a listen, and premiere’s the acid drenched remix of the track from Spatial Awareness.
Wigan-born, London-based DJ and producer Wes Baggaley is no stranger to the dance music scene. As a youngster his bedroom was littered with pop and house music 7″ singles, a trend which has remained with the self-confessed vinyl addict up to this day (although we imagine he keeps them in order nowadays).
Entrenching himself in scenes is something that Baggaley has made his mission. Starting out in Manchester, he soon made his way down south to London, where he has played numerous parties for promoters such as Horse Meat Disco, Secret Sundaze, and Robert Johnson, among many others. Such credentials ensured that Wes made a very prominent name for himself, becoming an integral part of the lgbtqi+ dance community, and beyond, as both producer and DJ.
2017 and 2018 saw Wes‘ career explode, and rightly so. His dedication to electronic music has earned him enviable spots at both Boiler Room and Mixmag‘s The Lab London. It is his years of experience, absorbing every beat, that stands him in good stead for his productions, and it certainly shows with his new release, Murder Part 1.
The single, released on 14th June, sees Wes taking a turn down dark, gritty techno terrain. The track is rich in doom-laden sample-use, from the glitched out vocal chatter that opens the track, through to the menacingly persistent skriking of the synth. Both of these segue in percussive programming with just the right amount of swing to give this dark little number a funky edge.
Baggaley take influence from some common tropes of Detroit’s brand of techno, particularly the synth stab that enters the fray around a third of the way through and use of those recognisable claps. This is an excellent debut for the producer on Interzone, and we look forward to seeing what he comes up with next.
The flip features an acid drenched remix of the original from Interzone co-boss, Spatial Awareness. His re-work takes some of the darkness out of Wes‘ original number, and coats it in pH-0, so there is plenty to get excited about for those lovers of the little silver box. Elements of Baggaley original production remain, as the indistinct vocal chunnerings are still present, yet this time they usher in a glorious acid line that injects a lighter mood into the track.
Don’t just take our word for it, anyway! You can listen to an exclusive premiere of the Spatial Awareness re-rub at the top of the page. If you like what you hear (which we venture you definitely will), grab a copy using this link.
