Birmingham’s Makaton drops a brand new release on his Rodz Konez imprint; Lustrate. The Waveform Transmitter‘s Ste Knight enjoys three accomplished tracks from the techno stalwart.
Fans of loopy, driving Birmingham techno will no doubt be able to dive straight into Steve Bailey AKA Makaton‘s latest EP and find themselves awash with sound that is deeply hypnotic in nature. Lustrate spreads itself over three tracks, and explores a range of sounds, all of which give the release a distinct science-fiction feel.
The Makaton handle will be familiar to anyone worth their electronica salts, as will his Rodz Konez label, as Bailey has appeared on several high profile labels from those nestled in the midlands, including Blueprint, to Berlin’s influential underground stable, VOITAX. Rodz Konez was formed as a vehicle through which Makaton‘s releases could see light of day and, as such, the label is dominated by a swathe of his inspiring productions.
We begin our trajectory with Redshift, a piece that hammers home a definite minimal feel. An undulating acid bassline is accompanied by a 303 pulse that commands the top end of the mix. Neat little breakdowns and their subsequent builds keep things lively throughout the track, and the space-age feel of its elements genuinely add to the retro-futuristic quality in the production.
Next up we have the discombobulating burner, Over, which delivers dub-techno in the first instance, before we hit warp-speed with the distinctly industrial segments that interject. The two sounds wrestle each other to dominate the track, which succeeds most when they unify. The result is a deeply mesmerising composition that is a genuine representation of experimental techno.
We end our journey with Proximity, a recording that makes deft use of siren-like pads, panic alarm synth patterns, and an insistent, bulbous kick drum to really close the narrative out, evoking images of atmospheric re/entry. Lazer zaps pepper the track, further authenticating the EP’s sci-fi credentials.
Makaton‘s Lustrate is released on November 11th, via the Rodz Konez imprint. Follow them on BandCamp for release updates…
