Business News
Business news is the part of journalism that focuses on economic and financial events, trends and changes in societies. It is a broad subject, and many newspapers, magazines, radio-news shows, and television channels have dedicated business news segments. Those segments are usually a mix of news and features, including interviews with key players, as well as analysis of important events.
A business is any establishment that engages in commercial, industrial or professional activity for profit. It may be organized as a sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation or a trust. It can also be non-profit, as long as the primary purpose is to support a charitable cause. The most common structure is the corporation, in which the owner has limited personal liability and a legal identity separate from the owners’ personal assets. A corporation can be owned by shareholders or by the state, as is often the case with public companies.
The practice of publishing business news began in 1700 when Daniel Defoe, best known for his novels such as Robinson Crusoe, started a newspaper called The Daily Evening Post. Other early business publications included the Wall Street Journal, founded in 1882 by Charles Dow, Edward Jones and Charles Bergstresser. The Journal became one of the world’s most respected financial newspapers, and is still published today.
In addition to major business news organizations, there are a variety of niche business news outlets. Some focus on a specific geographic area, while others cover business news across the globe. For example, the International Business Times covers global news stories related to commerce, trade and finance. Other popular business news outlets include the New York Times, Forbes and Fortune.
While most news outlets will have some type of business coverage, those looking for more detailed information should consider subscribing to industry-specific journals or publications. These will provide more in-depth news and analysis and often have experts on staff to offer commentary.
