Daily news is a term used for a newspaper, broadcast or web publication that delivers the latest national and international news. It was also a staunch supporter of the Yankees, Mets and Giants, whose logo appeared on its front page as early as 1940.

From the 1990s onward, it shifted to a more centrist stance, taking on liberal positions on social issues and supporting progressive policies. Its editorial board fought for the rights of minorities and the poor, and its reporters won awards for investigative reporting. The Daily News was also a strong advocate of the First Amendment and its own editorial independence from its parent company, the Tribune Company.

In 1990, the Daily News’ ten unions, joined by the Allied Printing Trades Council, launched a five-month strike that cost the paper more than a million dollars in lost revenue. The Daily News continued to publish by hiring non-union replacement staff but suffered a $70 million loss in the fourth quarter of 1990 alone.
