The Daily News
The Daily News is a morning tabloid newspaper that once held the distinction of being the highest-circulation newspaper in the United States. Founded in 1919 by Joseph Medill Patterson and owned by the Tribune Company of Chicago, it quickly earned a reputation for sensational pictorial coverage and its willingness to go further than its competitors in pursuit of attention-grabbing front page stories. The newspaper achieved its greatest success in the 1930s, with its coverage of the Great Depression and the Second World War, when it soared to a circulation of almost 2 million daily.
The New York Times was the heir apparent to the Daily News during its heyday, but the paper began to lose ground to competing tabloids in the 1960s. The Daily News gained a reputation for championing the First Amendment, as well as the rights of people in New York City—especially those viewed as having no voice—and won Pulitzer Prizes for its editorials on these topics (in 1996 for E.R. Shipp’s pieces on race and welfare and in 1998 for Mike McAlary’s story about police brutality against Haitian immigrant Abner Louima).
In the late 1990s, under the direction of editors-in-chief (first Pete Hamill, then Debby Krenek), the Daily News developed a reputation as an advocate for the city, especially its poorest citizens. Its reporters were known for their willingness to confront corrupt officials and to report on the mistreatment of animals. In the 2000s, the Daily News embraced new technologies to make its publication more available to readers. It was the first major metropolitan paper to publish online, and in 2003, it created a digital version of its newspaper that allowed subscribers to access articles on their mobile phones.
As of 2017, the newspaper’s circulation has fallen to less than half a million, making it one of the few big daily newspapers to experience a significant decline in readership. Despite this, the Daily News continues to be an influential source of news in New York City and around the globe.
