What is Law New?
Law New is the term that describes the use of innovative strategies to deliver legal services. This is a rapidly evolving area of the industry and it can include everything from working with underserved communities to coming up with new ways to reach clients. Ultimately it’s about using innovation to offer the kind of help that clients need without impacting other areas of practice that are important to a firm’s profitability.
When the clock struck midnight and 2023 quietly began, dozens of state laws went into effect. From quirky to serious, these laws affect people across the country and are poised to reshape many different industries.
In Missouri, it will be a misdemeanor for homeless people to sleep or camp on state-owned lands. The bill also requires cities and counties to create outreach teams to help the homeless. In New York, voters will get a little more leeway on Election Day. A new law will allow a voter to cast a ballot at an assigned polling station even if it is not their district.
The committee on open government may promulgate guidelines regarding deletion of identifying details from records otherwise available under this section to prevent unwarranted invasions of personal privacy. The committee shall review these guidelines annually.
Under the law, agencies will have to disclose to the public any data breach in which sensitive personal information has been accessed, disclosed or used by an unauthorized person. The law will also require the City to share information with affected individuals, including those whose information has been accessed or disclosed.
Previously, the City had to disclose only certain information about a public official’s arrest or booking, but under this law that would expand to cover any photograph taken by an officer or investigator at or near the time of an arrest or a crime scene photograph. The law will also require police departments to post this information on their websites.
In addition to this law, other new laws and rules enacted in 2022 include requirements for open captioning in motion picture theaters and automated employment decision tools.
