A recurrent theme, image or structure in a work of art or other cultural product. It can be a particular genre of entertainment such as film, music, theatre or literature. It may also be a particular event such as a concert or an exhibition. Entertainment can be diverting or enthralling and it has the ability to transform the mundane realities of everyday life into an experience that is enjoyable.

From French entertaiment, from the verb stems of which it is derived (starting with commenc- and ending with -ment), representing Latin mentum, which formed nouns in English by adding -ment to the root verb (as in amaze-ment from amaze, better-ment from better, merriment from merri).
