On the Radar: Chris Leon & Matt Sawyer – Alis

Matt Sawyer is back, this time joining forces with fellow Italian, Chris Leon, for some top tech-house action. The Waveform Transmitter’s Ste Knight has the lowdown.

We’ve come to expect great things from our friend Matt Sawyer since we first heard his Good Morning EP on Top Town Records, a few months back. Needless to say, the Italian whizzkid hasn’t disappointed (just wait until you hear his contribution to our House for the Homeless compilation) and his latest excursion on the Top Town imprint, with label mate Chris Leon, is quite the tech-house banger.

Chris arrived on Top Town in December 2016, with his Trilogy single; a tripped out techno affair which offers listeners something a little more thoughtful than straight up 4×4 beats and bass.

Alis comes as a double-header, with an orginal mix and a Matt Sawyer mix. Both tracks are equally strong, but the Sawyer mix simply serves to allow Matt free reign to do as he pleases, and tease in his characteristic sound a little more than the collaborative effort.

The track is very much one that brings the bassline to the fore, allowing it centre stage as it sweeps across the front of the mix, engulfing the listener in buzzing bottom end, while the piano lead skips playfully around the sound space. Certainly, if anything, this one is perfect peak time fodder, ideal for those face-down, fists pumping moments.

Matt‘s work on the flip ramps up his signature lugubrious sound, with minor chords dashing through the mix like no tomorrow. The track takes on a more lilting quality than the original, which is never a bad thing, of course.

Alis will be released on June 22nd 2017 on Top Town Records.
