Event Review: Ancient Methods, Meat Free, Manchester

Ancient Methods, Sarin, and more played at Manchester’s iconic Meat Free night recently. Ahead of the brand’s up-coming 5th birthday, The Waveform Transmitter‘s Amber Howard reports on a night of blistering techno mayhem.

On Friday 26th January, The White Hotel saw a sea of techno lovers unite, creating an insane atmosphere at another yet another outstanding Meat Free event.

The location for this event provides everything an underground techno party could ever need. An eerie atmosphere was created in the intimate warehouse setting. This was aided by the exposed white brick walls with obscure visuals projected onto them. These elements certainly set the scene for what was going to be an unforgettable evening…

Energy was high from the offset of the Aufnahme + Wiedergabe showcase. First to the decks were Meat Free residents, aalice and Lucy ironmonger, who kicked off proceedings with a driving techno sound which set the mood for things to come.

Next to grace the decks, Berlin producer, SARIN. He played a live set from 1- 2am. This iconic hour featured a wobbly, acid bassline with consistent influences of breakbeat. The set could be described as aggressive whilst also being a groovy party starter.

Headliner Ancient Methods played an extended set (2- 5am). From the offset Ancient Methods hit the crowd with fast, ‘in your face’ techno with layers of percussion. This, paired with a rolling bassline, maintained energy which was seriously electric though out. The basslines layered up with disturbing vocal samples, creating a dark and almost sinister feel on some occasions.

Consistently intense kick-drums and rolling percussion kept the crowd moving for the entire three hours. The set ventured into the darker metallic sounds of techno, concluding with a hard hitting, synthy bassline, leaving all present wanting more.  It is fair to say, both Berlin boys brought blistering sets.

For anyone wanting a break from the madness inside, a cool chill out sofa area was there to be enjoyed by all party goers. This element was definitely appreciated by the crowd.

Residents Blasha and Allatt closed the event playing from 5 – 7am. From the start of their set it was clear these girls hadn’t come to mess around, from the thundering kick drums to frantic, yet groovy basslines.  Pace increased throughout and peaked at 146 bpm when closing, surely the perfect start to anyone’s Saturday morning!

Once again Meat Free provided an absolutely incredible atmosphere, bringing a little taste of Berlin to Salford. That’s how an underground techno party is done!

Thankfully the Meat Free brigade are bringing us yet another night for the calendar, in the form of their 5th birthday, when the master himself Ben Sims is back again, after his MF debut last March. Alongside other huge names; Billy NastyAlienata, Alex Downey, Tasha and the usual legendary residents.
