The 55th edition of our mix series is provided by the ever brilliant Spatial Awareness, ahead of the release of his Malice EP next week on the Arcade Pony imprint. The Waveform Transmitter‘s Ste Knight takes a listen.
Electronic music’s very own shapeshifter, Tony Pontius, AKA Spatial Awareness has been causing neat little waves to ripple across the ocean of sound for several years now. He has enjoyed releases across a number of labels, with Interzone Music Club and Get Up Recordings minting his records. His most recent EP, Malice, is due for release next week, and features two tracks that straddle genres in much the same way as Tony does.
Having remixed tracks for the likes of Boy George, Jozef K, and Type 303 on one of our favourite labels, I Love Acid, it goes without saying that Spatial Awareness has a deft hand in the studio so, when Malice dropped into our promo box here at The Waveform Transmitter, we were eager to give it a digital spin. We were glad we did.
The EP is split across two tracks. We open things up on the A with the title track, which sits on the housier side of electro. Tough, pumping kicks transition us nicely into Spatial Awareness’ world, before computer blips enter the fray. These herald the arrival of a nefarious bassline, delivered courtesy of a Moog, which Pontius manipulates with dexterity.
The star of the show goes to the breakdown at the midpoint, though. Stripping the track back to its bare-essentails, Spatial Awareness builds the layers back up again, before we descend into the kind of mind-bending synth-work that made LFO‘s Freak so damn infectious. Volleys of stabs are sent in our direction, as the percussion relentlessly pokes us into spasmodic baltering. Malice is a track to get messy to.
The flip provides no respite from Spatial Awareness‘ insistence that we flail around a dark, sweaty dancefloor – real or imaginary – as Zombie Problems pre-empts what we may all become should we continue to jack our bodies fervently to his beat. It can’t be helped, though, as the B is as groove-laden as its predecessor.
Club ready drum programming shakes us violently to attention, as the bassline distortion creeps in, rising in intensity toward the first percussive break. Spatial Awareness has a knack of producing music to loose your shit to, and Zombie is no exception to the rule. Gloriously contagious, the synth is bananas × ∞, oscillating and arpeggiating wildly while the urgency of the bassline increases to the crescendo.
We will be premiering a track from the record next week, so stick around if you want to see how right we are about how fucking great the Malice EP is. In the meantime, take a listen to Waveform 055 with Spatial Awareness at the helm. You can check out the tracklist, below our message. This mix is a firecracker, just don’t let it go off in your hands…
